Study interior design in Italy

Why I decided to study Interior Design in Italy.

Author: Tara Acheson – Interior & Furniture Design Master Student.

What Interior Design means to me

“Transforming a space” is about listening, learning, creating, inspiring, innovation, culture, and delivering.
Yet at the same time, it is being considerate and sympathetic to a space.

In fact, this perspective took me to study interior design in Italy.

Why Interior Design?

To begin with, I really enjoy to put together a space, a room, a house, or a commercial space that pleases others. Moreover, I like to make visions come to life, and to inspire where one may not have a vision.

I remember since I was a young girl, I have always been so excited to go to other people’s houses. I love to see how people decorate their homes.

What does their kitchen look like? How are their bathrooms and bedrooms? Do they have wallpaper, or paint? Are the floors wooden, stone, tiled, or carpeted? When I walk into a room, I think about how I would use the space if it were mine.

I love to see how someone channels their personality throughout their homes and how they design and place their furniture. Thus, I believe this is how my Interior Design Journey began.

My previous work

I worked as a real estate agent in London. As such, I could dive into tens of homes a day and walk through the interior of the building. I could see how a home was so different despite it being a mirror image of the apartment next door.

In fact I understood that lighting, colors, furniture, pictures, paintings fabrics, and textiles can completely change an interior.

My first experience

This is where, I have not worked professionally, but worked alongside a number of interior designers from England. I had first-hand insight and experienced “a day in the life of an interior designer”. After doing so, I knew I had to get myself qualified so I can professionally pursue a career in the field.

Moreover, I have worked on one main project which is my family’s house in Herefordshire U.K. We purchased it in August of 2021. Construction started in June 2022, that will last 9 months. Currently, the house is a skeleton, if you will.

At that time I was living London and knew I didn’t want to study interior design there. I explored countries throughout Europe, and kept coming back to Italy.

Study Interior Design in Italy

I have been at STAR Florence Design School for two weeks now and already learnt so much. My first lesson was the technique of drawing, which definitely improved my skills. I feel much more confident, and even better it is now clear what I am drawing to myself and others.

Before I started the course I wasn’t the best with a pencil, but I am happy to say I am no longer the worst. Of course, I needed to practice. To begin with, in my free time I would draw circles, triangles, and all shapes. I know sounds a little boring, but after a few hours, I had control of the pencil, and brain to hand coordination.

3D design

After gaining my confidence with a pencil, it was time to learn Sketchup! Sketchup is a 3D modeling program that designers use to create 3D objects and floorplans. It’s a great tool to use, to be able to visualize exactly what a kitchen, room, bedroom, etc. will look like.

One can ensure that furniture, cabinets, appliances paintings, and just about anything will fit. It’s especially handy for bespoke fit-to-order pieces. It’s a great tool to use to see visions come to life, just the step before “life” to ensure its exactly as you and the client would want.
