A Cutting -Edge Culinary School Design that blends learning and dining
By: Maria Antonia Restrepo & Francisco Serrano Mora
As Interior design students, we were given the exciting challenge of designing a culinary school that functioned as an educational space and redefined the dining experience. Our concept was built around a dynamic kitchen module system, where the act of cooking and dining seamlessly merged, creating an immersive and interactive environment for both students and guests.
From Facade to Identity: The Evolution of the SFIZIO Logo
The branding of SFIZIO was deeply connected to the architectural structure itself. The logo design was derived from the geometric lines of the facade, layering them to form a cohesive visual identity. This geometric foundation did more than define the logo—it influenced the entire interior design, shaping the flow of movement, guiding the kitchen layout, and ensuring a unified aesthetic throughout the space.

A Bistro-Classroom Hybrid: Redefining Culinary Education
Our vision was to create a bistro-classroom hybrid, where the boundaries between a professional kitchen and a dining space disappear. Guests are immersed in the experience—watching their meals being prepared in real-time and engaging with the culinary process from start to finish. This innovative approach enhances the learning experience for students by exposing them to real-world customer interactions, food presentation, and the artistry behind each dish.

Optimized Spatial Flow: Symmetry, Functionality & Efficiency
To ensure a harmonious restaurant design, we implemented symmetrical kitchen modules, allowing for a natural and intuitive flow throughout the space. The elevated master chef area serves as the central hub, where students receive instruction before moving to the adjoining lounge area to refine their recipes. From there, they transition back to their kitchen modules, seamlessly integrating learning with hands-on practice.
This structured yet fluid layout optimizes workflow efficiency, enhances creativity, and ensures that both students and guests experience a space that feels balanced and immersive.

The Kitchen Modules: A Balance of Form & Function
At the heart of SFIZIO’s design are the custom kitchen modules, which blend functionality, aesthetics, and ergonomic efficiency. Drawing inspiration from the facade, we designed two primary zones:
• The Preparation Area – Featuring stainless steel countertops, framed by walnut wood cabinetry, this area exudes professionalism and precision.
• The Dining Area – Defined by natural oak finishes, this space contrasts with the preparation zone, creating a seamless yet distinct transition from cooking to dining.
Additionally, elements from the original facade design are subtly incorporated into the module’s curved edges and foot space, maintaining a cohesive architectural identity while adding a touch of warmth and elegance.
An Experiential Learning Space That Bridges Education & Hospitality
SFIZIO is more than just a culinary school—it is an immersive learning environment that transforms cooking into a performance. Students engage with real-world restaurant scenarios, refining their skills in an interactive and professional setting. Guests, in turn, experience a deep appreciation for the culinary arts, witnessing the passion and craftsmanship behind every dish.

This project is not just about aesthetics or function—it’s about storytelling, experience, and the seamless fusion of education and hospitality. SFIZIO represents the future of culinary school design, where innovation and gastronomy come together to create an unforgettable dining and learning experience.
