INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENT: creative mind

A creative mindful Article By Henrike Mohr, our Interior Design student.

To have a creative mind is not always easy. In fact, I am often struggling. Actually, it can lead you to give up on your dream and on yourself. As an interior design student, I can say that out there it’s full of critical and loud voices, subjective opinions, competition, pressure, and failures (which are actually the best).

That‘s why believing in yourself is so important! Moreover, you can do everything you want to because you are capable of it! Thus, always prioritize and believe in yourself and the beauty you can bring into this world.

In the following, I will tell you what my Creative Journey is looking like, and what is helping me im(proving) myself to be a good Designer and fulfill my dream.

#1 NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOURSELF

First of all, there is a lot of competition out there in the interior design field, but believe and concentrate on your Strengths!

You are your worst enemy and criticizer. Listen and appreciate when someone is telling you, your work is good. If you‘re passionate about something you will be good at it – because you will always want to climb higher than you actually think you can and that‘s the key.

#2 BE PATIENT AND MAKE MISTAKES

Give yourself time, no one is directly perfect in what she/he is doing. A line that is not quite perfect is always more interesting than one that is. Imperfection means Perfection. So accept your weaknesses and work with them, they are actually your strengths. Mistakes lead to the best ideas. You are the one who has to be convinced by your own work.

#3 FIND YOUR OWN LANGUAGE

First, try to find out what Design means to you, and develop your own Language. If you don‘t know how and what you want to express through your work, you will never tell your own story. Go deep inside yourself.

#4 STEP OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Never be too comfortable, otherwise, there won‘t be any improvement.

If you‘re interested in something, try your best to get to know and learn this knowledge. There is always more to learn and especially discover. It‘s a never-ending (love-hate) journey. Always be motivated, and don‘t let others do your work!

#5 SHARE YOUR BEST IDEA

… and if not, it will never be the best one. Always talk with others, also to those who aren‘t related in your field, about it – critics mean perfection! Make the best advantage of the critical voices in and outside of you, because if they won‘t have anything more to say, you will have found the right solution.

#6 GO OUT, SEE THE WORLD

You need to be in a good mood, be productive and creative, don‘t only focus on your study/work. Go out, meet friends, go traveling, and look around – through the beauty of the world you see what your inner mind wants to tell you. Rest, empty your mind, and just then you will be creative and inspired again.

#7 DREAM BIG, WORK HARDER

Having a creative Mind means on one side having a Talent/Gift, but on the other half, it means hard work. Most of the ideas we have won‘t make it to the final end, so you need a lot of stamina. I think we are all dreamers, but don‘t get too lost in them, otherwise, they will just stay dreams.

Dealing with creativity is different for everyone – it counts what you are doing out of it. This blog entry was just to show you what the path looked like and what thoughts helped me. Of course, there is much more to write about.

But feel free to let me know below in the comments if you agree with me on some points and what you have experienced on your journey so far. I would be very happy about an exchange. Otherwise, I hope this post brings you the courage and strength that you are good enough. Because you definitely are!
